Department of Philosophy Major & Minor Degrees
A.B. In Philosophy
The program of the department is designed to guide the student in the systematic investigation of such basic issues as the nature of reality, knowledge, value, and obligation. This involves studying the major figures of the western philosophical tradition and assessing the major options that have emerged. The student acquires the philosophical skills of inquiry, including critical thinking, the discovery and evaluation of basic assumptions, the analysis of concepts, the analysis of experience, and the construction and assessment of arguments.
Second Major in Philosophy
As a second major, philosophy can add competence in logic, critical analysis, and effective writing to the specialized knowledge offered in your other major and appreciably increase your chances in the job market.
Minor in Philosophy
A philosophy minor combines well with majors across the sciences and the humanities. The department offers all undergraduates at UGA a chance to think seriously about the essential questions of human life and existence.
Minor in Law, Ethics, & Philosophy
In partnership with the School of Law, the minor in Law, Ethics, and Philosophy is designed to provide University of Georgia students with the opportunity to achieve a deeper understanding of legal and ethical modes of thinking, as well as to increase their familiarity with the philosophical concepts and arguments used in these fields.
