Statement in Support of AAPI Students, Staff, and Faculty

Peabody Hall

The Department of Philosophy endorses the recent statement from the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences regarding the recent Atlanta shootings. We express our support for, and solidarity with, Asian and Asian-American staff, students and faculty as well as our commitment to equity, inclusiveness and respect:

The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences expresses support for, and solidarity with, our Asian and Asian-American students, staff, and faculty following the fatal shootings in Atlanta. The murder of eight people, six of them Asian and seven of them women, reminds us of this country’s ongoing anti-Asian racist actions and violence against women.

The racist and xenophobic rhetoric directed at Asian American and Pacific Islanders, which has been apparent since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, is part of a long history of episodic violence against Asians in the U.S since the late 1800s.

Resources for the campus community include the Ombudsperson programand the Equal Opportunity Office.  Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition addressing anti-Asian hate is also a recommended resource.  Students are encouraged to also take advantage of support resources available to you, including: Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), Multicultural Services and ProgramsInternational Student Life, and Student Care and Outreach.

We reaffirm our commitment to equity, inclusiveness, respect, and dignity for all. We recognize and value the vibrancy and many contributions of our Asian and Asian-American colleagues on campus and around the world. We are committed to supporting scholarship, research and creative activity that gives voice to the experience of the marginalized in our society and which will provide us with evidence-based practices to become better anti-racist allies.
