On the Limits of Artificial Intelligence”: The many successes in AI, most recently in mastering the game of GO or in solving the protein folding problem, have led many to assume that AI is of unlimited potential, and that we will in the future be in a position to engineer freely moving AI-agent robots that could mingle with human beings and address difficult, and even dangerous, situations in something like the way that human police officers do today. We will show that such visions are unrealizable, and that there are strict limits to what AI systems can do, limits rooted in the very nature of AI engineering. Barry Smith is one of the most widely cited contemporary philosophers and a prominent contributor to both theoretical and applied research in ontology. He is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Philosophy in the University at Buffalo, with joint appointments in the Departments of Biomedical Informatics, Neurology, and Computer Science and Engineering. His pioneering work in applied ontology led to the establishment of Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) as the most commonly adopted upper-level ontology development framework, now used in hundreds of applications especially in biology and medicine, and increasingly in areas such as military intelligence and industrial engineering.
