In a January 2013 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, the University of Georgia’s Department of Philosophy was recognized for its strong support of female scholars. The article recounted the ongoing challenges women face in a field primarily dominated by men. Nationally, less than 20 percent of full-time faculty members in Philosophy are female, compared to approximately 40 percent for all fields. However, the proportion of female faculty members in UGA’s Department of Philosophy is 43 percent—six of the Department’s 14 full-time faculty are women and a seventh, Jennifer Wang, will be joining the faculty in Fall 2013. This is the highest proportion of female faculty among the nation’s top Philosophy programs. Department head Victoria Davion, who was one of only two female faculty when she was hired in 1990, was quoted in the Chronicle article: "At Georgia women are hired and are successful at promotion and tenure. That shows there is hope for improvement in the field."
