In Memory of Raymond Woller 1941-2024

Raymond Woller

Longtime Philosophy faculty member Raymond Woller recently passed away at the age of 83. A scholar of Ontology, Metaphysics, Analytic Philosophy, and John Locke, Dr. Woller taught at UGA from 1994 until his retirement in 2011, serving as a lecturer, Philosophy undergraduate advisor, Cognitive Science undergraduate coordinator, fellow of the Artificial Intelligence Center, and department representative to the Board of Regents Philosophy Advisory Committee. He is remembered fondly by former colleagues and students for both his sense of humor and serious scholarship.

"Ray was a rare blend of intellectual depth, wisdom, and light-hearted wit. He had an exceptional ability to engage with the profound questions of life, drawing from his vast philosophical knowledge, yet he never let those lofty ideas weigh down his delightful sense of humor," recalls professor Yuri Balashov. "He had a knack for making complex ideas accessible, often mixed with well-timed jokes or anecdotes that left everyone smiling... It was this balance between seriousness and playfulness that endeared him to so many people around him, students and colleagues, friends and family members alike."

"Professor Woller left a fond memory and made an imprint, and I’ve talked about him, his energy and his wit often to people over the years," recalls former student Alex Balashov. "The intriguing window he offered into the discipline, with considerable charisma, convinced me to switch my major to philosophy... Professor Woller's tilt toward contemporary, analytic problems roped me in and upset my stereotypes about what the study of philosophy in the Anglo-American world really entails. Lofty ideas aside, I particularly appreciated Prof. Woller's dry humour, matched by a subtly wry and self-aware delivery."
