Minor in Law, Ethics, & Philosophy Announced

Peabody from Law School

The Department of Philosophy is excited to announce a new minor in Law, Ethics, and Philosophy in partnership with the UGA School of Law. This course of study gives undergraduate students an enhanced opportunity to achieve a deeper understanding of legal and ethical modes of thinking and increase their familiarity with philosophical concepts and arguments used in these fields.

"We're really excited to offer this new major which  was developed in response to strong interest in law and philosophy among our majors and minors," says philosophy department head Aaron Meskin.

The minor will enable students to develop enhanced analytical and critical thinking skills, with special emphasis on legal and moral reasoning, increasing their ability to think and argue in a manner that will benefit them in a variety of careers and areas of post-graduate study.

"This course of study will allow a diverse array of undergraduate students to gain insights into legal thinking, develop analytical skills, and examine ethical issues prominent in contemporary legal debates while gaining an understanding of the theoretical foundations of legal theory," adds undergraduate coordinator Athanasios Samaras.

Required coursework covers the fundamental principles and the historical development of ethical and legal thought alongside an introduction to relevant areas in philosophy. Students will receive the knowledge and skills to address some of the most critical contemporary issues in law and ethics.
